| Michael Mackay, Curator of the AWCC
Prior to taking up his current position as Curator of the AWCC in 1983 Michael was Senior Plant Breeder for Cargill Seeds and an oilseed breeder with CSIRO. He has always had an interest in plant genetic resources and was active in introducing world collections of sunflower and safflower into Australia during the 1970s. Michael, together with Ken Street and Paul Brennan (a GRDC consultant), drew up the original proposal for this project. The objective was always a rational approach to searching, identifying and delivering novel genetic variation to breeders and other researchers. The combined collections and expertise of ICARDA, VIR and the AWCC were essential to developing this prototype method of targeting specific genetic resources for subsequent evaluation. In many ways the project represents the culmination of Michael's experience in identifying new genetic variation. Michael proposed a logistical system of identifying germplasm for specific traits in 1995 which involved a heuristic approach - FIGS is an extension of this model. |

| Dr Kenneth Street, Project Coordinator, Genetic Resource Unit, ICARDA |
 | | Ken Street gained his PhD studying the eco-geographic variation in the reproductive ecology of a forage legume species, at ICARDA and the University of Western Australia .
Since then he has worked as a research officer for the University and in 1999 took a position at the ICARDA Genetic Resource Unit, Aleppo Syria where he coordinates projects aimed at collecting conserving and utilizing genetic resources.
He currently coordinates the Project detailed in this web-site.
